Last week's study looked at 2 Cor. 3:6 and concluded that the goal of a parent is to lead a child to be sensitive to the leading of the Spirit, not merely submissive to a set of rules. A child walking with the Spirit will have little need for a set of rules since the Spirit will lead them into all righteousness. This week we turn to 1 Corinthians 1:8-9 to look at another key truth that parents must teach their children.
8 He will also strengthen you to the end, so that you will be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 God is faithful; you were called by Him into fellowship with His Son,Jesus Christ our Lord. 1 Corinthians 1:8-9 (HCSB)
Paul begins in 1 Corinthians 1:8 by telling his spiritual "offspring" that he did not want them to be "unaware" of his struggles that he endured because of his faith. Although we do not need to share every "adult" struggle with our children, Paul says that he wants the Corinthians to know his spiritual struggles. Our children ought to be aware of our spiritual struggles too. If they are not, they will think that the Christian walk was easy for us and should be easy for them. They will also have no experience with how to face spiritual struggles. Reminding the Corinthians how to endure spiritual struggles was certainly on Paul's mind. After describing how his suffering caused him to "despair of life," Paul states that he faced his despair by remembering that he had a "death sentence within himself." He endured the feeling of wanting to die by remembering that he had died to himself already. Each day, Paul died to himself and lived for Christ. In Galatians 2:20, Paul says "I no longer live, but Christ lives in me."
Our children need to be aware of our spiritual struggles so that we can show them that we struggle in order to reveal Christ's life in us (2 Cor. 4:11). We tell them how we struggle in order to show them how we face them by allowing Christ to be strong in our weaknesses. Have we been hiding our struggle to walk by the Spirit, or do we share how hard it is to walk with Jesus so that our lives can be a picture of dying to our own desire for an easy, comfortable, entertained life and living for Jesus whatever the cost. (A great resource for teaching our older children about the schemes of the devil is “Screwtape Letters” by C.S. Lewis. It identifies how the devil attacks so parents can discuss how to be prepared for these attacks). Are you teaching your child about spiritual warfare?
